Tips and Tricks for Preparing Your Snow Thrower for Winter

There is no worse feeling than being stuck with a driveway full of snow and a broken snow thrower. This is why it is so important to service your snow thrower throughout the year and perform proactive maintenance. If you do not service your machine routinely, it will not continue to work and perform in the way you want it to. Even though it is August, now is the time to start preparing your snow thrower for the winter. Here are some tips and tricks:

Check Oil Level

You will first want to check the oil level on your snow thrower and make sure it is up to level. You turn and pull it out the dip-stick just as you would on a car. Check the level and determine if you need to add more oil.

Check Fuel

Next up is to check the fuel. You may have fuel in the thrower from last year, if it smells off, you should drain it and add new gas. To drain the fuel, you will want to make sure you have a good sized drain pan. Unscrew the nut underneath the carburetor, and place the drain pan underneath.

Once you have drained the snow thrower of the fuel, you can add the new fuel. You can add gas and also add StarTron. This stabilizes the gas and also cleans out what is left within the carburetor. Gas normally has a shelf-life of 30-60 days. You can also purchase TruFuel which lasts longer than gas. This can be a great option for snow throwers, as you do not need gas as often as you would for a car.

Check Controls

Now that you have oil and gas in the snow thrower you will want to make sure the machine turns on and check the controls. Make sure that both the auger and transmission engage.

Check Chute

You will now want to check and ensure that your chutes turn properly and the directional parts work as well.

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

If you are going to be using a snow thrower this winter, one of your top priorities should always be safety. Failure to do so could results in bodily harm or injury.

Suburban Lawn Equipment is here to help prevent any accidents from occurring with these helpful safety tips when using a snow thrower! Keep reading!

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

  1. Clear debris before using. It’s important to keep in mind that the snow thrower is a powerful piece of equipment and it will pick up debris or rocks in its path. To avoid damage clear the area before use.
  2. Wear appropriate clothing. Clothing and other accessories are at risk of becoming entangled in the moving parts of the snow thrower. Avoid wearing long scarves, dangling jewelry, or any other form of loose clothing while operating this machinery.
  3. Go with the wind. Whenever possible, do not fight the wind. Try to point the chute downwind so that it helps blow snow.
  4. Avoid severe weather conditions. You should always avoid operating a snow thrower during heavy snowfall or minimal visibility. Waiting for heavy snowfall to pass is the recommended time to start using the snow thrower.
  5. NEVER use hands/feet to clear a clog. If you experience a clog or blockage you should first shut off the equipment, and then use either a long clean out tool, stick or broom to dislodge snow or debris from the moving parts.

How To Choose The Right Snow Thrower For The Job

How To Choose The Right Snow Thrower For The Job

It’s almost winter season, which means getting up to a fresh coat of snow more often than not. While it might be the most magical time of the year, for many of us homeowners it means a lot of additional work…

Depending on where you live, you might have to deal with shoveling your driveway or backyard almost every single day. However, what if we told you that this chore doesn’t have to be so painful? Just let the Snow Thrower do the heavy lifting for you!

In today’s post, we gathered all the information you need to Choose The Right Snow Thrower For The Job.

the right snow thrower for the job

How To Choose The Right Snow Thrower For The Job

  1. Backyard/ driveway size – Bigger equipment doesn’t always equal to a better job. Electric snow blowers can clear light snow from sidewalks and small driveways. For smaller driveways, single-stage units can do the job. For driveways over 60 feet, choose a two- or three-stage unit.
  2. Surface type – For level surfaces, use auger-assisted, push-propelled models. Engine-driven wheels will work best for sloped terrain. If you need more traction, you can use tire chains with some models.
  3. Snowfall size – Up to 12” – Use an Electric Snow Thrower. 13” – Single-stage, 23.5” – Two-stage, and up to 21” – Three-stage.
  4. Snowfall kind – Single-stage units can handle light snow. To cut through wet, hard snow or ice, go for a two-stage unit. If you need to get the job done in less time, go for a three-stage snow thrower.
  5. Usage – Pick snow blowers that are well designed and easy to handle for an individual, such as this single-stage Honda snow thrower.

Still not sure what snow throwers is appropriate for your needs? Make sure to stop by Suburban Lawn Equipment in Wilmington, Delaware! Our outdoor power equipment experts will be happy to assist you! we will assist you.

4 Benefits of Having A Snow Blower This Winter

3 Reasons to Buy A Snow Blower

Winter truly can be one of the most beautiful times of the year. One morning you wake up to layers of white, perfect snow but then…  You realize something. Your driveway is gone! Now you’re faced with a the dreadful task of finding your way out. While using a snow shovel is what every homeowner typically has on stand, it is not the most practical equipment for heavy snow removal. Especially, if you’re on the time crunch trying to get to work in the morning! This is when a snow blower comes in handy…

3 Reasons to Buy A Snow Blower

  1. It saves time. Did you know a small snow blower can remove up to 650 pounds of snow in 60 seconds? When you find your driveway stuck under a lot of snow, a snow blower will clear your way within minutes! No more standing in the freezing cold in the morning when you’re supposed to be on your way to work!
  2. It does the work for you! All you got to do is start the machine and direct it in the right way! No more problems with your back or shoulders!
  3. It keeps you safe. A snow blower is so efficient, it can effortlessly throw snow 20 to 30 feet away! Who doesn’t love a flawless and safe driveway in the winter, especially when you’re using foot traffic?!

Needless to say, the snow blower is a great investment for your home during the winter season. Just remember, clear any debris within its path to avoid damage and to clear snow up and down rather than going across.

We highly recommend checking out our current Cub Cadet Snow Days Special, where you can get 10% off any model in the Cub Cadet X-Series Snow Throwers from your authorized Cub Cadet Dealer in Delaware. The promotion ends in 4 days on October 8th!
