Understanding the Truth Behind Snow Blower Myths

Winter brings with it the magical allure of snow-covered landscapes, but for homeowners, it also means the inevitable task of snow removal. As snowblowers become a staple in the winter season, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction to ensure efficient and successful snow removal. In this blog post, we’ll debunk 6 common snow blower myths, providing you with the knowledge needed for a winter season marked by smooth, trouble-free snow removal.

Myth 1: All Snow Blowers Are the Same

This myth oversimplifies the diversity of snow blowers available. From single-stage to two-stage, electric to gas-powered, and varying clearing widths and intake heights, snowblowers differ significantly. Understanding these distinctions is key to selecting the right snowblower for your specific needs.

Myth 2: More Horsepower Equals Better Performance

While horsepower is a factor, it’s not the sole determinant of a snowblower’s effectiveness. The overall design, auger system, and build quality are equally important. A holistic view of a snowblower’s features is essential for gauging its performance accurately.

Myth 3: Snow blowers Can’t Handle Wet or Heavy Snow

Modern snow blowers are designed to tackle a variety of snow conditions, including wet and heavy snow. Two-stage snow blowers, with their auger and impeller systems, excel at handling denser snow. Regular maintenance and proper operation are crucial for optimal performance under challenging conditions.

Myth 4: You Don’t Need to Maintain Your Snow blower

Maintenance is the key to a snowblower’s longevity and performance. Neglecting regular tasks such as spark plug checks, oil changes, and lubrication can lead to decreased efficiency and costly repairs. A well-maintained snow blower is a reliable snow removal companion.

Myth 5: Snow blowers Are Dangerous to Use

While any machinery carries risks, proper usage and adherence to safety guidelines significantly mitigate these dangers. Familiarizing yourself with the user manual, wearing appropriate safety gear, and following recommended operating procedures ensure a safe and productive snow blowing experience.

Myth 6: Snow blowers Are Only for Large Properties

Snowblowers come in various sizes to suit different properties. Compact electric models are perfect for sidewalks and smaller driveways, while larger gas-powered two-stage snow blowers are designed for more extensive snow removal on larger properties.

Conclusion

As winter approaches, arming yourself with the correct information about snowblowers is crucial for a successful and stress-free snow removal season. Debunking these common myths ensures that you make informed decisions, choose the right snowblower for your needs, and navigate winter with confidence. Embrace the snow with the right knowledge, and let your snowblower be your trusted ally in the battle against winter’s icy grip. Check out our current snow blower inventory today!

Choosing the Right Snow Blower for Your Needs This Winter

As the temperature drops and winter blankets our surroundings in a layer of snow, the need for an efficient snow removal solution becomes imperative. The humble shovel is undoubtedly a classic, but for those seeking a more efficient and time-saving option, a snow blower is the winter warrior you need. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential considerations for choosing the right snow blower to tackle the challenges of your winter wonderland.

1. Know Your Property

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to snow blowers. The first step in making the right choice is understanding the size and layout of your property. For smaller driveways and walkways, a single-stage snow blower may suffice. However, if you’re dealing with a larger area, a two-stage snow blower with enhanced power and capacity might be the more suitable option.

2. Consider Snow Type and Depth

Not all snow is created equal. Wet, heavy snow requires a different approach than light, fluffy snow. Additionally, the depth of snowfall in your region is a crucial factor. Single-stage blowers are ideal for light snow on smaller surfaces, while two-stage blowers with their added power are better suited for deeper snow on larger properties.

3. Power Source

Snow blowers come in electric, gas-powered, and battery-operated variants. Each has its pros and cons. Electric blowers are environmentally friendly and easy to maintain but may have limited power. Gas-powered blowers, on the other hand, offer more power but come with increased maintenance requirements. Battery-operated models are cordless and offer a good balance of power and convenience, but their runtime may be a consideration for larger jobs.

4. Auger and Impeller

Understanding the mechanics of a snow blower is crucial. The auger is the component that gathers and lifts the snow, while the impeller propels it through the discharge chute. Consider the materials and design of these components to ensure they are suited to the type of snow you’ll be facing. Metal augers are robust and durable, while plastic ones are lighter and may be suitable for lighter snow.

5. Ease of Use

Nobody wants to wrestle with a complicated machine in freezing temperatures. Look for features like adjustable chute controls, easy-start systems, and ergonomic handles. Some models even come with heated handles to keep your hands warm during operation.

Conclusion

In the vast landscape of snow blowers, finding the perfect fit for your needs requires careful consideration. Remember, investing time in research now can lead to seasons of effortless snow removal ahead. At Suburban Lawn Equipment our team is here to help you embrace the winter wonderland with the right snow blower by your side!

3 Easy Tips on Using Your Snow Thrower

Did you recently purchase a new snow thrower and need some quick advice on how to use it?

Check out a few snow thrower operating tips, so you’ll be prepared to take on the snow this winter. Whether it is from a few inches or a blizzard.

Check Your Snow Thrower in Advance

Check the following before you use your snow thrower:

  • Have the gas tank filled with fresh stabilized fuel, and the oil is filled to the proper level.
  • Make sure to clear all foreign objects from your driveway or sidewalk.
  • Wear appropriate clothing that will not get stuck on any parts of the machine. This would include gloves, safety glasses, and bright colored clothing.
  • Read the Owner’s Manual to understand how to operate the controls.

Start the Snow Thrower in an Appropriate Area

Before you start, make sure the auger and drive clutch are disengaged. You will want to start your snow thrower outside or in the garage with the door open, so the fumes won’t be overpowering.

Many snow blowers now come with an electric start option, which requires an extension cord to be plugged into an outlet. Check your owner’s manual for extension cord recommendations.

Snow Thrower DON’TS

In all the excitement of operating your snow thrower, don’t forget about these snow blower don’ts.

  • You do not want to leave a running snow thrower unattended.
  • Don’t clean out the chute or augers with your hands or feet.
  • You will not want to  point the chute at buildings, cars, or people.
  • Don’t refuel while the engine is on.
  • You should not start the snow thrower in an enclosed area.
  • Don’t use the snow thrower to clear anything other than snow

Conclusion

The best piece of advice when learning to use new equipment is to read the owner’s manual for more detailed explanations on how to operate certain parts and features. So, when the next Winter storm comes, you’ll be ready to get out there and try out your snow blowing skills.

Tips and Tricks for Preparing Your Snow Thrower for Winter

There is no worse feeling than being stuck with a driveway full of snow and a broken snow thrower. This is why it is so important to service your snow thrower throughout the year and perform proactive maintenance. If you do not service your machine routinely, it will not continue to work and perform in the way you want it to. Even though it is August, now is the time to start preparing your snow thrower for the winter. Here are some tips and tricks:

Check Oil Level

You will first want to check the oil level on your snow thrower and make sure it is up to level. You turn and pull it out the dip-stick just as you would on a car. Check the level and determine if you need to add more oil.

Check Fuel

Next up is to check the fuel. You may have fuel in the thrower from last year, if it smells off, you should drain it and add new gas. To drain the fuel, you will want to make sure you have a good sized drain pan. Unscrew the nut underneath the carburetor, and place the drain pan underneath.

Once you have drained the snow thrower of the fuel, you can add the new fuel. You can add gas and also add StarTron. This stabilizes the gas and also cleans out what is left within the carburetor. Gas normally has a shelf-life of 30-60 days. You can also purchase TruFuel which lasts longer than gas. This can be a great option for snow throwers, as you do not need gas as often as you would for a car.

Check Controls

Now that you have oil and gas in the snow thrower you will want to make sure the machine turns on and check the controls. Make sure that both the auger and transmission engage.

Check Chute

You will now want to check and ensure that your chutes turn properly and the directional parts work as well.

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

If you are going to be using a snow thrower this winter, one of your top priorities should always be safety. Failure to do so could results in bodily harm or injury.

Suburban Lawn Equipment is here to help prevent any accidents from occurring with these helpful safety tips when using a snow thrower! Keep reading!

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

  1. Clear debris before using. It’s important to keep in mind that the snow thrower is a powerful piece of equipment and it will pick up debris or rocks in its path. To avoid damage clear the area before use.
  2. Wear appropriate clothing. Clothing and other accessories are at risk of becoming entangled in the moving parts of the snow thrower. Avoid wearing long scarves, dangling jewelry, or any other form of loose clothing while operating this machinery.
  3. Go with the wind. Whenever possible, do not fight the wind. Try to point the chute downwind so that it helps blow snow.
  4. Avoid severe weather conditions. You should always avoid operating a snow thrower during heavy snowfall or minimal visibility. Waiting for heavy snowfall to pass is the recommended time to start using the snow thrower.
  5. NEVER use hands/feet to clear a clog. If you experience a clog or blockage you should first shut off the equipment, and then use either a long clean out tool, stick or broom to dislodge snow or debris from the moving parts.
