Why Every Home Needs a Generator for Backup Power

When it comes to protecting our homes and families, we often think of measures like security systems, insurance, and disaster preparedness plans. While these are unquestionably important, there’s one crucial aspect of home safety that is sometimes overlooked: backup power. Power outages can occur for a variety of reasons, from severe storms to equipment failures, and they can leave us in the dark, both literally and figuratively. That’s where residential generators come into play, and throughout this blog, we’ll explore why every home should have one.

1. Reliability during emergencies

In times of crisis, having a reliable source of backup power can make all the difference. Whether it’s a hurricane, blizzard, or an unexpected electrical grid failure, a generator can keep your essential appliances and systems running. This means you can maintain access to vital services such as heating or cooling, refrigeration, and communication devices. In extreme cases, a generator can even be a lifesaver for individuals who rely on medical equipment that needs electricity to function.

2. Preserving perishable items

During an extended power outage, your refrigerator and freezer can become ticking time bombs for your perishable food supply. A generator ensures that your food remains safe to consume, preventing costly losses and food waste. Additionally, for those who rely on refrigerated medications, a generator can prevent potentially life-threatening disruptions in their healthcare routine.

3. Protecting your home

Power outages and blackouts can lead to various issues that can harm your home. For instance, sump pumps may stop working, leading your basement to flooding during heavy rain. A generator can keep these crucial systems operational, safeguarding your property from damage.

4. Maintaining Comfort

Extreme weather conditions can be challenging to endure without heating or air conditioning. A generator allows you to maintain a comfortable indoor environment, which is especially important for sensitive family members such as children and the elderly. This can also prevent your home’s pipes from freezing in cold climates.

5. Security and Peace of Mind

A dark home is an inviting target for burglars. With a generator, you can keep your security system active, ensuring your family’s safety even during a power outage. Moreover, the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re prepared for emergencies is invaluable. You won’t have to scramble for candles and flashlights or worry about your phone running out of battery.

6. Increasing Property Value

Installing a backup generator can also add value to your property. Potential buyers are often willing to pay more for a home equipped with a generator, seeing it as a valuable asset for their own peace of mind.

Conclusion

In a world where power outages can disrupt our lives and jeopardize our safety, having a backup generator is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. Whether you live in an area prone to natural disasters or just want to ensure your family’s comfort and security, investing in a residential generator is a wise decision.

Remember, when choosing a generator, consider your specific needs and consult with your local professionals at Suburban Lawn and Equipment to ensure proper installation and maintenance. With the right generator in place, you can weather any storm and keep your home and loved ones safe, no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Don’t wait until the next outage; start preparing for a brighter, more secure future today. See what Generators are in stock at Suburban Lawn Equipment!

Tips and Tricks to Maintaining a Beautiful Yard with Pets

As a pet owner, you understand the joy and companionship that your furry friends bring to your life. However, the presence of pets can pose unique challenges when it comes to maintaining a healthy and beautiful lawn. Balancing your yard’s well-being with the needs of your pets requires a bit of planning and consideration. In this blog, we’ll explore 5 effective strategies for lawn care that cater to both your yard’s health and the happiness of your four-legged companions.

1. Mow the Grass Higher

Mowing your grass at a greater height offers numerous advantages, particularly with pets. Taller grass results in deeper roots, enhancing the lawn’s strength and resilience. Allowing grass to grow taller ensures it can endure pet-related wear and tear. However, this doesn’t mean neglecting mowing entirely; adjust your mower cutting height to the highest recommended level for your grass type to strike the right balance.

2. Proper Lawn Watering

Pets can cause soil compaction, which makes it harder for water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots. Adequate watering practices, such as deep and infrequent watering sessions, help ensure your lawn stays hydrated.

3. Prevent Urine Spots

To maintain a healthy lawn, pay attention to the areas your dog frequents. If the grass turns yellow like straw before it dies and browns, it’s possible to save these patches. When you spot yellow areas, flush the soil to remove excess nitrogen and salts from your dog’s waste. Use specialized soil treatments like Revive Dog Spot Treatment, Spotless Lawn Dog Spot Aid, or Envii Neuterine to prevent dog urine damage. Acting promptly is crucial – if the grass turns brown, it’s too late, and reseeding will be necessary.

4. Avoid chemical lawn treatments

Common lawn treatments like fertilizers, weed killers, pesticides, and fungicides contain chemicals that can harm dogs if ingested. Dogs can be exposed by licking paws or eating grass. To ensure your dog’s safety during yard play, it’s best to avoid chemicals completely. Consider using home remedies or organic, chemical-free products as alternatives.

5. Maintenance Scheduling

Maintaining a consistent schedule is essential, especially for lawns with pets. Regularly mow your grass at a higher level to help conceal discolored spots from pet urine. If your pet creates worn paths, rake the grass regularly to restore its upright position. Additionally, keep up with regular watering using sprinklers, especially during dry periods.

Keep your Grass Looking Great

Lawn care for pet owners involves finding a balance between creating a beautiful yard and providing a safe and enjoyable space for your pets. With thoughtful planning, proper maintenance, and a bit of creativity, you can maintain a lawn that thrives while accommodating the needs of your furry companions. By following these tips, you can foster a harmonious environment where both your lawn and your pets can flourish together.

5 DIY Outdoor Projects Made Easier with Power Equipment

When it comes to tackling outdoor projects, having the right tools can make all the difference. Power equipment provides a significant advantage, allowing you to complete tasks more efficiently and with less physical strain. In this blog post, we’ll explore five DIY outdoor projects that are made easier with the help of power equipment. From lawn care to landscaping, these projects can be accomplished more quickly and effectively, leaving you with more time to enjoy your outdoor space.

1. Perfecting the Lawn with a Lawn Mower

Maintaining a lush and well-manicured lawn is a priority for many homeowners. One of the most essential power tools for lawn care is a quality lawn mower. With features like adjustable cutting heights and self-propulsion, mowing becomes a breeze. Whether you have a small yard or a large expanse of grass, the right power lawn mower will make the task quicker and more efficient, leaving your lawn looking pristine.

2. Trimming Hedges and Trees with Power Tools

Trimming hedges and trees is another common outdoor project that can be time-consuming and physically demanding. However, with the right power tools like hedge trimmers and chainsaws, this task becomes much easier. Power hedge trimmers effortlessly shape hedges, giving them a neat and tidy appearance. Similarly, a chainsaw can make quick work of pruning branches and even felling small trees. These tools offer precision and power, making your trimming projects more manageable.

3. Sprucing Up the Deck with a Power Pressure Washer

Over time, decks can accumulate dirt, grime, and mildew, making them look worn and uninviting. A power pressure washer is an excellent tool for rejuvenating your deck’s appearance. With high-pressure water jets, a power washer effectively removes built-up dirt and stains, revealing the deck’s natural beauty. Power pressure washers are also useful for cleaning other outdoor surfaces like patios, driveways, and fences, saving you hours of scrubbing with a brush. Check out our power pressure washers we have in stock today!

4. Excavating and Landscaping with a Tiller

Creating a new garden bed or revamping an existing one often involves digging and preparing the soil. This can be a labor-intensive task, but a power tiller can simplify the process. Tilling machines break up compacted soil, allowing for better nutrient absorption and root growth. They save time and energy compared to manual digging, enabling you to prepare large areas efficiently. Whether you’re planting flowers, vegetables, or creating a new landscape design, a power tiller will be your trusted companion.

5. Clearing Leaves and Debris with a Leaf Blower

Maintaining a tidy yard during the fall season can be challenging due to the continuous influx of fallen leaves and debris. A power leaf blower provides a quick and efficient solution. Instead of raking for hours, a leaf blower blows away leaves, twigs, and other debris in a matter of minutes. With adjustable speed settings and nozzle attachments, you can direct the airflow precisely where it’s needed, simplifying the cleanup process and leaving your yard looking pristine.

Conclusion

Power equipment revolutionizes the way we approach outdoor projects. From mowing the lawn to clearing debris and beautifying landscapes, power tools save time, effort, and ensure excellent results. By investing in the right power equipment, you can transform your outdoor space while minimizing physical strain and maximizing efficiency. So, whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a homeowner looking to tackle outdoor projects, consider harnessing the power of these tools to make your tasks easier, more enjoyable, and ultimately achieve the outdoor oasis you’ve always desired. Power and Efficiency: Battery-Powered String Trimmers

String trimmers are essential tools for maintaining a well-manicured lawn. Traditionally, gas-powered trimmers dominated the market, but with advancements in battery technology, battery-powered string trimmers have emerged as a powerful and efficient alternative. These cordless tools offer the perfect balance of cutting-edge power and remarkable efficiency, transforming the way we approach lawn care. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of battery-powered string trimmers, highlighting how they provide both the performance and convenience needed for effective yard maintenance.

1. Embrace Cordless Freedom

One of the most significant advantages of battery-powered string trimmers is the freedom they provide. With no cords to restrict your movement, you can navigate freely around your yard, reaching tight corners, edging along pathways, and trimming around obstacles with ease. This cordless freedom eliminates the hassle of managing cords and increases your overall productivity, making yard work a breeze.

2. Quiet and Environmental Friendly

Unlike gas-powered trimmers, battery-powered string trimmers operate quietly and emit zero harmful emissions. This eco-friendly feature not only contributes to a healthier environment but also enhances your trimming experience. Reduced noise levels allow you to work in your yard without disturbing the peace, while the absence of emissions promotes sustainability by minimizing your carbon footprint. With battery-powered string trimmers, you can maintain your lawn with a clear conscience.

3. Impressive Power: Taming Thick Grass and Weeds

Battery-powered string trimmers offer impressive cutting power that can rival their gas-powered counterparts. Modern lithium-ion batteries deliver ample power to tackle thick grass, stubborn weeds, and overgrown vegetation. These trimmers can effortlessly slice through tough plants, providing clean and precise cuts for a neatly manicured lawn. With high-capacity batteries and advanced motor technology, battery-powered string trimmers ensure efficient trimming performance

4. Lightweight and Ergonomic Design: Comfort and Maneuverability

Battery-powered string trimmers are designed with user comfort and ease of use in mind. These tools are significantly lighter than gas-powered models, reducing strain and fatigue during extended trimming sessions. Their ergonomic handles provide a comfortable grip, allowing for precise control and reduced hand fatigue. With their lightweight construction and balanced design, battery-powered string trimmers ensure optimal maneuverability, making it easier to trim hard-to-reach areas and navigate uneven terrain.

5. Convenient and Low Maintenance

Battery-powered string trimmers require minimal maintenance compared to gas-powered counterparts. There’s no need for fuel, oil changes, or spark plug replacements. Simply charge the battery, and you’re ready to trim. This convenience saves you time and eliminates the hassle of dealing with gasoline and oil. With fewer moving parts, battery-powered string trimmers also tend to have fewer maintenance issues, allowing you to focus on your lawn care tasks with peace of mind.

6. Versatility and Safety Features

Battery-powered string trimmers often come with interchangeable heads or attachments, expanding their functionality beyond just trimming. With compatible attachments, you can easily convert your trimmer into an edger, blower, cultivator, or brush cutter, providing versatility for various yard maintenance tasks. This flexibility means you can tackle multiple jobs with a single tool, saving you money and storage space.

Battery-powered string trimmers offer the perfect blend of power, efficiency, and convenience for maintaining a well-groomed lawn. With their cordless freedom, impressive cutting power, and eco-friendly operation, these trimmers provide a superior alternative to gas-powered models. Their lightweight design, ergonomic features, and low maintenance requirements make them user-friendly and accessible for homeowners of all skill levels. Embrace the power and efficiency of battery-powered string trimmers, and experience the ease.

Is it Time to Ditch Your Gas Lawn Mower for an Electric One?

Maintaining a well-polished lawn is an important aspect of owning a home. Mowing the lawn may not be everyone’s favorite chore, but it is necessary for keeping the grass healthy and promoting a neat and organized appearance. When it comes to lawn mowers, there are two main types: gas mowers and electric mowers. Throughout this blog, we will go through the differences between gas mowers and electric mowers to help you determine which is the best choice for your lawn care needs.

Gas Lawn Mowers

Gas mowers are powered by a gasoline engine and are the most common type of lawn mower on the market. They are typically more powerful than electric mowers and are capable of handling larger lawns or more rugged terrain. Gas mowers also tend to have a longer lifespan than electric mowers, and they can be more durable.

One of the advantages of gas mowers is that they do not require a power source, allowing them to be used in remote areas or in locations where there is no access to an electrical outlet. However, this also means that they are not environmentally friendly and produce more emissions than electric mowers. Additionally, gas mowers require more maintenance than electric mowers, including regular oil changes and spark plug replacements.

Electric Lawn Mowers

Electric mowers are powered by electricity and are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmentally friendly nature. They are typically less powerful than gas mowers, but they are still capable of handling most residential lawns. Electric mowers are also quieter than gas mowers, making them a good option for neighborhoods with noise restrictions.

One of the main advantages of electric mowers is their ease of use. They do not require fuel, oil changes, or spark plug replacements, and they are much lighter and easier to maneuver than gas mowers. Electric mowers are also more affordable than gas mowers and have a lower operating cost. They can be plugged into any standard electrical outlet, making them a convenient option for homeowners who do not have a lot of storage space.

However, electric mowers do have some disadvantages. They are not as powerful as gas mowers and may struggle with tall or thick grass. They also require a power source, which can limit their use in remote areas or large properties where an extension cord may not be long enough. Additionally, the battery life of cordless electric mowers may not be sufficient to complete larger lawns without needing to be recharged.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the choice between a gas mower and an electric mower comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of your lawn. Gas mowers are more powerful and durable, but they require more maintenance and are not environmentally friendly. Electric mowers are quieter, more affordable, and easier to use, but they may not be powerful enough for larger or more rugged lawns.

Consider the size and terrain of your lawn, your budget, and your environmental concerns when deciding between a gas mower and an electric mower. Regardless of which type of mower you choose, maintaining a well-manicured lawn is an essential part of homeownership that can increase your home’s curb appeal and provide a welcoming outdoor space for you and your family to enjoy.

5 Lawn Mowing Myths Debunked

As the weather gets warmer and the grass starts to grow, it’s time to start thinking about lawn maintenance. One of the most important tools in lawn care is your lawn mower, but with so many myths floating around about how to properly use it, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. Throughout this blog, we will debunk 5 of the most common lawn mower myths you might have heard.

Myth #1: You Should Mow Your Lawn as Short as Possible

Many people believe that mowing your lawn as short as possible is the best way to keep it looking neat and tidy. However, cutting your grass too short can actually be harmful to your lawn. When grass is cut too short, it doesn’t have enough leaf area to produce energy through photosynthesis. This can weaken the grass and make it more susceptible to disease, weeds, and pests. To avoid this issue, aim to cut no more than one-third of the grass blade length each time you mow.

Myth #2: You Should Mow Your Lawn in the Same Direction Every Time

Another common myth is that you should always mow your lawn in the same direction. The theory behind this is that it will help prevent ruts and grooves from forming in the grass. However, mowing in the same direction every time can actually cause the grass blades to lean in one direction. To keep your lawn looking its best, try changing the direction you mow each time you cut the grass. Alternating the pattern allows the blades to return to a more upright position.

Myth #3: You Should Sharpen Your Mower Blades Every Year

While it’s true that sharp mower blades are important for a clean cut, you don’t necessarily need to sharpen them every year. Instead, it’s better to sharpen your mower blades when they start to dull. Some signs that your mower blades need sharpening could include ragged, torn grass blades and a choppy, uneven cut. If you’re not comfortable sharpening your mower blades yourself, bring them into Suburban Lawn Equipment to take care of that for you.

Myth #4: You Should Bag Your Grass Clippings

Many people believe that they should always bag  grass clippings and remove them from the lawn. However, grass clippings can actually be beneficial for your lawn. As the clippings break down, they release nutrients back into the soil that can help fertilize your lawn. In addition, leaving the clippings on the lawn can help reduce water evaporation and soil erosion.

Myth #5: You Should Only Mow When Your Grass is Dry

The last myth is that many people believe you should only mow your lawn when the grass is dry. While it’s true that wet grass can be more difficult to mow, it’s not always needed to wait for dry conditions. As long as your mower blades are sharp, mowing wet grass shouldn’t cause any harm to your lawn. Just be sure to take extra care when maneuvering your mower on wet grass to avoid slipping or damaging the grass.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many myths surrounding lawn mower usage during the spring season. By understanding the facts behind these myths, you can ensure that you’re using your mower properly and keeping your lawn looking healthy and vibrant. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully maintained lawn this spring!

Start the Season Right: How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for Spring

As the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow, it’s important to prepare your lawn mower for the spring season. Proper maintenance can help your lawn mower run smoothly and efficiently, ensuring that your lawn looks its best. Here is a checklist of steps you can take to prepare your lawn mower for spring:

1. Change the Oil

Before you start using your lawn mower, check the oil level and condition. If the oil is dirty or low, replace it with a high-quality oil that is recommended for your lawn mower. Check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.

2. Change the Spark Plug

A worn or dirty spark plug can make it difficult to start your lawn mower or cause it to run poorly. Replace the spark plug at the beginning of each mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower runs smoothly.

3. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, which can cause it to run poorly. Clean or replace the air filter at the beginning of each mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower is running efficiently.

4. Sharpen the Blades

Dull blades can tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which can damage the grass and make it more susceptible to disease. Sharpen the blades before the start of the mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower cuts the grass cleanly and efficiently.

5. Check the Fuel

If you left fuel in your lawn mower over the winter, it may have gone bad. Drain the old fuel and replace it with fresh fuel that is recommended for your lawn mower. Make sure to use the correct fuel-to-oil ratio, and never use old or stale fuel.

6. Inspect the Belts and Cables

Check the belts and cables on your lawn mower for any signs of wear or damage. Replace any worn or damaged parts to ensure that your lawn mower is running safely and efficiently.

7. Check the Wheels

Check the wheels on your lawn mower to ensure that they are properly inflated and free from damage. Properly inflated wheels will ensure that your lawn mower is running smoothly and making even cuts.

By following these steps to prepare your lawn mower for spring, you can ensure that it is running smoothly and efficiently. A well-maintained lawn mower will not only help you achieve a beautiful lawn, but it will also last longer and require fewer repairs over time. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, bring your mower to Suburban Lawn Equipment for a service.

3 Easy Tips on Using Your Snow Thrower

Did you recently purchase a new snow thrower and need some quick advice on how to use it?

Check out a few snow thrower operating tips, so you’ll be prepared to take on the snow this winter. Whether it is from a few inches or a blizzard.

Check Your Snow Thrower in Advance

Check the following before you use your snow thrower:

  • Have the gas tank filled with fresh stabilized fuel, and the oil is filled to the proper level.
  • Make sure to clear all foreign objects from your driveway or sidewalk.
  • Wear appropriate clothing that will not get stuck on any parts of the machine. This would include gloves, safety glasses, and bright colored clothing.
  • Read the Owner’s Manual to understand how to operate the controls.

Start the Snow Thrower in an Appropriate Area

Before you start, make sure the auger and drive clutch are disengaged. You will want to start your snow thrower outside or in the garage with the door open, so the fumes won’t be overpowering.

Many snow blowers now come with an electric start option, which requires an extension cord to be plugged into an outlet. Check your owner’s manual for extension cord recommendations.

Snow Thrower DON’TS

In all the excitement of operating your snow thrower, don’t forget about these snow blower don’ts.

  • You do not want to leave a running snow thrower unattended.
  • Don’t clean out the chute or augers with your hands or feet.
  • You will not want to  point the chute at buildings, cars, or people.
  • Don’t refuel while the engine is on.
  • You should not start the snow thrower in an enclosed area.
  • Don’t use the snow thrower to clear anything other than snow

Conclusion

The best piece of advice when learning to use new equipment is to read the owner’s manual for more detailed explanations on how to operate certain parts and features. So, when the next Winter storm comes, you’ll be ready to get out there and try out your snow blowing skills.
