Gear Up for Spring: A Step-by-Step Lawn Mower Maintenance Checklist

As spring is just around the corner, it’s time to gear up for a lush, green lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood. One crucial aspect of lawn care that often gets overlooked is proper maintenance of your trusty lawn mower. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll take you through a step-by-step lawn mower maintenance checklist to ensure your equipment is in top shape for the upcoming season.

Step 1: Pre-Season Inspection

Before you even think about firing up your lawn mower, conduct a thorough pre-season inspection. Check for any visible damage, loose bolts, or worn-out parts. Inspect the spark plug, air filter, and oil level, making note of any issues that need addressing. This initial examination sets the foundation for a trouble-free mowing season.

Step 2: Spark Plug and Air Filter Replacement

A fresh start begins with a new spark plug and a clean air filter. Replace the spark plug to ensure efficient combustion, and clean or replace the air filter to prevent dust and debris from entering the engine. This simple step significantly improves engine performance and longevity.

Step 3: Oil Change

Just like any other engine, your lawn mower requires clean and properly leveled oil for optimal functioning. Drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and refill with the recommended oil type. Regular oil changes keep the engine running smoothly and extend its lifespan.

Step 4: Blade Inspection and Sharpening

A sharp blade is essential for a clean and healthy lawn cut. Inspect the mower blades for any signs of damage or dullness. If needed, sharpen the blades or replace them to ensure a precise cut, promoting overall lawn health.

Step 5: Check Belts and Cables

Examine the belts and cables for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or frayed belts, and ensure that cables are properly adjusted. Well-maintained belts and cables contribute to smooth operation and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Step 6: Clean Undercarriage and Deck

Over time, grass clippings, debris, and moisture can accumulate under the mower deck, leading to rust and corrosion. Clean the undercarriage thoroughly, removing any residue that may impede performance. A clean deck ensures proper grass discharge and prevents clogs.

Step 7: Lubrication

Keep your mower running smoothly by lubricating moving parts such as wheel axles, bearings, and linkages. Apply the recommended lubricant to prevent friction and enhance the overall performance of your lawn mower.

Conclusion

Your lawn mower is a critical tool that helps keep your lawn looking its best. By following this step-by-step maintenance checklist, you can ensure that your mower is ready for the spring season. Regular maintenance not only enhances your mower’s performance but also extends its lifespan, saving you time and money in the long run. Now that you’re equipped with this knowledge, it’s time to gear up for spring and get your lawn mower in tip-top shape.

DIY Winter Equipment Storage Solutions for Your Garage

Winter brings with it the challenge of finding efficient storage solutions for your outdoor equipment. As the days get colder, it’s essential to prepare your garage for the winter invasion. In this blog post, we’ll explore DIY winter equipment storage solutions that will not only help you declutter your space but also ensure that your tools are easily accessible when needed.

1. Wall-Mounted Tool Racks

One effective way to maximize space in your garage is by installing wall-mounted tool racks. Create a dedicated area for winter tools such as snow shovels, ice scrapers, and brushes. Install hooks and holders to keep everything organized and within reach. This not only saves valuable floor space but also prevents the tools from getting buried under other items.

2. Pegboard Storage System

A pegboard is a versatile and cost-effective solution for organizing tools. Install a pegboard on a prominent wall in your garage and hang your winter equipment like snow blowers, leaf blowers, and even winter sports gear. Customize the layout with hooks, shelves, and baskets to accommodate different tool sizes.

3. DIY Overhead Storage Shelves

Make use of the often-overlooked overhead space in your garage by installing DIY overhead storage shelves. These shelves are perfect for storing seasonal items like sleds, skis, and even winter tires. Ensure that the shelves are sturdy enough to support the weight of your equipment, and use labeled bins for easy identification.

4. Rolling Storage Bins

Invest in rolling storage bins with wheels to make moving your equipment around a breeze. These bins are especially handy for storing smaller items like salt bags, ice melt, and gardening tools. Label each bin for quick identification and stack them in a corner for easy access when needed.

5. Cabinet Systems for Hazardous Materials

If you store chemicals like de-icing agents or fuel for your outdoor equipment, consider installing a cabinet system with secure doors. This keeps potentially hazardous materials out of reach of children and pets while ensuring they are stored in a controlled environment.

6. DIY Ski Rack

For winter sports enthusiasts, create a dedicated ski rack using simple materials like PVC pipes or wooden dowels. Mount the rack on a garage wall to keep skis, poles, and snowboards organized and prevent them from cluttering your garage floor.

Conclusion

With a bit of creativity and some DIY spirit, you can transform your garage into an organized and efficient space for winter equipment storage. These solutions not only help protect your valuable tools but also make it easier to locate and access them when winter weather strikes. Take the time to assess your garage space and implement these ideas to ensure a stress-free and organized winter season.

Start the Season Right: How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for Spring

As the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow, it’s important to prepare your lawn mower for the spring season. Proper maintenance can help your lawn mower run smoothly and efficiently, ensuring that your lawn looks its best. Here is a checklist of steps you can take to prepare your lawn mower for spring:

1. Change the Oil

Before you start using your lawn mower, check the oil level and condition. If the oil is dirty or low, replace it with a high-quality oil that is recommended for your lawn mower. Check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.

2. Change the Spark Plug

A worn or dirty spark plug can make it difficult to start your lawn mower or cause it to run poorly. Replace the spark plug at the beginning of each mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower runs smoothly.

3. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, which can cause it to run poorly. Clean or replace the air filter at the beginning of each mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower is running efficiently.

4. Sharpen the Blades

Dull blades can tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which can damage the grass and make it more susceptible to disease. Sharpen the blades before the start of the mowing season to ensure that your lawn mower cuts the grass cleanly and efficiently.

5. Check the Fuel

If you left fuel in your lawn mower over the winter, it may have gone bad. Drain the old fuel and replace it with fresh fuel that is recommended for your lawn mower. Make sure to use the correct fuel-to-oil ratio, and never use old or stale fuel.

6. Inspect the Belts and Cables

Check the belts and cables on your lawn mower for any signs of wear or damage. Replace any worn or damaged parts to ensure that your lawn mower is running safely and efficiently.

7. Check the Wheels

Check the wheels on your lawn mower to ensure that they are properly inflated and free from damage. Properly inflated wheels will ensure that your lawn mower is running smoothly and making even cuts.

By following these steps to prepare your lawn mower for spring, you can ensure that it is running smoothly and efficiently. A well-maintained lawn mower will not only help you achieve a beautiful lawn, but it will also last longer and require fewer repairs over time. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, bring your mower to Suburban Lawn Equipment for a service.

snow thrower

Tips and Tricks for Preparing Your Snow Thrower for Winter

There is no worse feeling than being stuck with a driveway full of snow and a broken snow thrower. This is why it is so important to service your snow thrower throughout the year and perform proactive maintenance. If you do not service your machine routinely, it will not continue to work and perform in the way you want it to. Even though it is August, now is the time to start preparing your snow thrower for the winter. Here are some tips and tricks:

Check Oil Level

You will first want to check the oil level on your snow thrower and make sure it is up to level. You turn and pull it out the dip-stick just as you would on a car. Check the level and determine if you need to add more oil.

Check Fuel

Next up is to check the fuel. You may have fuel in the thrower from last year, if it smells off, you should drain it and add new gas. To drain the fuel, you will want to make sure you have a good sized drain pan. Unscrew the nut underneath the carburetor, and place the drain pan underneath.

Once you have drained the snow thrower of the fuel, you can add the new fuel. You can add gas and also add StarTron. This stabilizes the gas and also cleans out what is left within the carburetor. Gas normally has a shelf-life of 30-60 days. You can also purchase TruFuel which lasts longer than gas. This can be a great option for snow throwers, as you do not need gas as often as you would for a car.

Check Controls

Now that you have oil and gas in the snow thrower you will want to make sure the machine turns on and check the controls. Make sure that both the auger and transmission engage.

Check Chute

You will now want to check and ensure that your chutes turn properly and the directional parts work as well.

Five Reasons You Should Invest In A Pressure Washer

While pressure washers may seem expensive, they really are worth the investment. Suburban has a variety of pressure washers to choose from. Here are five reasons why a pressure washer is a good investment.

1. Keeps you and your family healthy

Allergens like pollen, mildew, algae and mold often settle in the crevices on the exteriors of homes. Pressure washing your home every so often can help to eliminate these allergens and alleviate any pesky allergy symptoms. Pressure washing is a great way to reduce symptoms during allergy season.

2. Increases property value

3. Saves you money in the long run

Hiring a pressure washing service can be expensive. The national average cost of a pressure washing service is $299. By purchasing a Hustler pressure washer from Suburban Lawn Equipment, after two uses you will already have made up the cost. By pressure washing regularly you can save on repair bills.

Avoid These 6 Landscaping Mistakes

Avoid These 6 Landscaping Mistakes

Mistakes in the landscaping business can prove to be time consuming and costly. These 6 landscaping mistakes are made more often than you would imagine. Avoid these mistakes and use our tips to avoid mulchy messes and cutting catastrophes on your next project!

Starting Without A Plan

The art form of planning and designing a landscape is unique because you not only take into account the size, colors, textures, and proportions of the project, but also it’s functionality. Failing to start your landscaping project with a plan can lead to an unattractive end result that doesn’t function properly, won’t last long enough, or even goes over budget.

Using The Wrong Tools

Using the right tools for a project can make all the difference when it comes to saving timing and keeping you and your team safe.

Match your tools to your project. The size of the job may influence the size and type of tools used, this goes for handheld tools and power equipment. Make sure to keep your tools clean and organized. For advice on tools and when to use them, speak to one of our equipment specialists.

 Cutting Grass Too Short

Grass length should change depending on the time of year. In the summer, grass requires more shade so that it doesn’t get burnt to a crisp. During these warmer months, leave the grass a little longer so that the blades can shade the soil and the water doesn’t evaporate so fast. During the colder months, grass should be cut shorter so that sunlight can reach the soil.

(Bonus tip: It’s a myth that if you cut your grass shorter, you won’t have to mow it as often).

Inappropriate Irrigation Systems

A project’s irrigation system ties back into the design of the project. Each plant requires different watering needs, so installing the appropriate irrigation system will save you a huge headache. Sprinkler set-ups and irrigation can tend to be an eye-sore if not done thoughtfully, so make sure to plan for this ahead of time when designing the landscape.

Forgetting About Wildlife

The type of plants and flowers used in your landscaping project can either attract or repel outside wildlife. When planning a project or discussing a project with your client, make sure to ask what critters they’d like to avoid. Deer can be attracted to beautiful flowers, so it couldn’t hurt to add some bitter-tasting plants to the bunch. Once they give those a try, they are sure to keep away from that yard.

Not Recycling

As most landscapers know, large projects can produce large amounts of waste. Rather than trashing branches, clippings, and other recyclable materials, try renting or investing in a quality shredder that can turn that waste into something useful. These debris can be turned into mulch, fertilizers, or compost. Plus, most compost piles can easily be hidden into a landscape.

Now that you know the most common landscaping mistakes and how to avoid them, your lawn care business can have the confidence that your next landscaping project will come out on top.
