Understanding the Truth Behind Snow Blower Myths

Winter brings with it the magical allure of snow-covered landscapes, but for homeowners, it also means the inevitable task of snow removal. As snowblowers become a staple in the winter season, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction to ensure efficient and successful snow removal. In this blog post, we’ll debunk 6 common snow blower myths, providing you with the knowledge needed for a winter season marked by smooth, trouble-free snow removal.

Myth 1: All Snow Blowers Are the Same

This myth oversimplifies the diversity of snow blowers available. From single-stage to two-stage, electric to gas-powered, and varying clearing widths and intake heights, snowblowers differ significantly. Understanding these distinctions is key to selecting the right snowblower for your specific needs.

Myth 2: More Horsepower Equals Better Performance

While horsepower is a factor, it’s not the sole determinant of a snowblower’s effectiveness. The overall design, auger system, and build quality are equally important. A holistic view of a snowblower’s features is essential for gauging its performance accurately.

Myth 3: Snow blowers Can’t Handle Wet or Heavy Snow

Modern snow blowers are designed to tackle a variety of snow conditions, including wet and heavy snow. Two-stage snow blowers, with their auger and impeller systems, excel at handling denser snow. Regular maintenance and proper operation are crucial for optimal performance under challenging conditions.

Myth 4: You Don’t Need to Maintain Your Snow blower

Maintenance is the key to a snowblower’s longevity and performance. Neglecting regular tasks such as spark plug checks, oil changes, and lubrication can lead to decreased efficiency and costly repairs. A well-maintained snow blower is a reliable snow removal companion.

Myth 5: Snow blowers Are Dangerous to Use

While any machinery carries risks, proper usage and adherence to safety guidelines significantly mitigate these dangers. Familiarizing yourself with the user manual, wearing appropriate safety gear, and following recommended operating procedures ensure a safe and productive snow blowing experience.

Myth 6: Snow blowers Are Only for Large Properties

Snowblowers come in various sizes to suit different properties. Compact electric models are perfect for sidewalks and smaller driveways, while larger gas-powered two-stage snow blowers are designed for more extensive snow removal on larger properties.

Conclusion

As winter approaches, arming yourself with the correct information about snowblowers is crucial for a successful and stress-free snow removal season. Debunking these common myths ensures that you make informed decisions, choose the right snowblower for your needs, and navigate winter with confidence. Embrace the snow with the right knowledge, and let your snowblower be your trusted ally in the battle against winter’s icy grip. Check out our current snow blower inventory today!

Why It’s Important to Service Your Snowplow in the Fall

Fall is here! As the leaves start to change, it’s easy to forget about the impending winter storms. But if you own a snow plow or rely on one to keep your property or business accessible during the snowy months, now is the time to act. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of servicing your snowplow in the fall and provide you with a comprehensive checklist to ensure you’re ready for the white stuff that’s just around the corner.

Fall is the ideal time for maintenance

Why should you service your snowplow in the fall, you ask? Well, timing is everything. Fall is the perfect season for this task. Waiting until the snow is falling and temperatures plummet is a recipe for stress and potential disaster. Here’s why:

  • Snowplow servicing in the fall allows you to catch and address issues before they become major problems during winter operations.
  • It ensures your snow plow is in peak condition when you need it most, reducing the chances of breakdowns during heavy snowfall.
  • It’s often more cost-effective to address maintenance and repairs in the fall than to deal with expensive emergency repairs in the middle of a winter storm.

Extend the Lifespan of Your Snowplow

Your snowplow is an essential tool for winter snow removal. To keep it running smoothly season after season, you must perform preventative maintenance. Here are some key components to inspect and maintain:

  • Plow Blade: Clean and inspect it for damage. A well-maintained blade cuts through snow more efficiently.
  • Moving Parts: Check and lubricate all moving parts, such as hinges and pins, to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Hydraulic System: Test and replace hydraulic fluids if necessary to maintain optimal performance.
  • Electrical System: Inspect and replace worn-out wiring to ensure your lights and controls work reliably.
  • Hoses: Check hydraulic hoses for leaks and wear, addressing any issues promptly.
  • Cutting Edge: Examine the cutting edge and replace it if it’s worn down to maintain effectiveness
  • Lift Frame: Lubricate the lift frame and pivot points to prevent rust and ensure smooth lifting.
  • Winch and Lift Mechanisms: Test and service these critical components to avoid breakdowns.
  • Safety Features: Verify that all safety features and lights are functioning correctly.
  • Frame and Mounting Hardware: Inspect the plow’s frame and mounting hardware for integrity.
  • Tires: Ensure tires are properly inflated to provide stability and traction.
  • Salt Spreader (if applicable): Clean and inspect it for winter readiness.

Conclusion

Servicing your snowplow in the fall isn’t just a good idea; it’s a proactive measure that can save you time, money, and stress during the winter months. By following our checklist for fall snow plow maintenance, you’ll ensure that your plow is in peak condition, ready to tackle whatever winter throws your way. Don’t wait until the first snowfall; schedule your maintenance now and enjoy a worry-free winter season.

Power and Efficiency: Battery-Powered String Trimmers

String trimmers are essential tools for maintaining a well-manicured lawn. Traditionally, gas-powered trimmers dominated the market, but with advancements in battery technology, battery-powered string trimmers have emerged as a powerful and efficient alternative. These cordless tools offer the perfect balance of cutting-edge power and remarkable efficiency, transforming the way we approach lawn care. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of battery-powered string trimmers, highlighting how they provide both the performance and convenience needed for effective yard maintenance.

1. Embrace Cordless Freedom

One of the most significant advantages of battery-powered string trimmers is the freedom they provide. With no cords to restrict your movement, you can navigate freely around your yard, reaching tight corners, edging along pathways, and trimming around obstacles with ease. This cordless freedom eliminates the hassle of managing cords and increases your overall productivity, making yard work a breeze.

2. Quiet and Environmental Friendly

Unlike gas-powered trimmers, battery-powered string trimmers operate quietly and emit zero harmful emissions. This eco-friendly feature not only contributes to a healthier environment but also enhances your trimming experience. Reduced noise levels allow you to work in your yard without disturbing the peace, while the absence of emissions promotes sustainability by minimizing your carbon footprint. With battery-powered string trimmers, you can maintain your lawn with a clear conscience.

3. Impressive Power: Taming Thick Grass and Weeds

Battery-powered string trimmers offer impressive cutting power that can rival their gas-powered counterparts. Modern lithium-ion batteries deliver ample power to tackle thick grass, stubborn weeds, and overgrown vegetation. These trimmers can effortlessly slice through tough plants, providing clean and precise cuts for a neatly manicured lawn. With high-capacity batteries and advanced motor technology, battery-powered string trimmers ensure efficient trimming performance

4. Lightweight and Ergonomic Design: Comfort and Maneuverability

Battery-powered string trimmers are designed with user comfort and ease of use in mind. These tools are significantly lighter than gas-powered models, reducing strain and fatigue during extended trimming sessions. Their ergonomic handles provide a comfortable grip, allowing for precise control and reduced hand fatigue. With their lightweight construction and balanced design, battery-powered string trimmers ensure optimal maneuverability, making it easier to trim hard-to-reach areas and navigate uneven terrain.

5. Convenient and Low Maintenance

Battery-powered string trimmers require minimal maintenance compared to gas-powered counterparts. There’s no need for fuel, oil changes, or spark plug replacements. Simply charge the battery, and you’re ready to trim. This convenience saves you time and eliminates the hassle of dealing with gasoline and oil. With fewer moving parts, battery-powered string trimmers also tend to have fewer maintenance issues, allowing you to focus on your lawn care tasks with peace of mind.

6. Versatility and Safety Features

Battery-powered string trimmers often come with interchangeable heads or attachments, expanding their functionality beyond just trimming. With compatible attachments, you can easily convert your trimmer into an edger, blower, cultivator, or brush cutter, providing versatility for various yard maintenance tasks. This flexibility means you can tackle multiple jobs with a single tool, saving you money and storage space.

Battery-powered string trimmers offer the perfect blend of power, efficiency, and convenience for maintaining a well-groomed lawn. With their cordless freedom, impressive cutting power, and eco-friendly operation, these trimmers provide a superior alternative to gas-powered models. Their lightweight design, ergonomic features, and low maintenance requirements make them user-friendly and accessible for homeowners of all skill levels. Embrace the power and efficiency of battery-powered string trimmers, and experience the ease.

5 Lawn Mowing Myths Debunked

As the weather gets warmer and the grass starts to grow, it’s time to start thinking about lawn maintenance. One of the most important tools in lawn care is your lawn mower, but with so many myths floating around about how to properly use it, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. Throughout this blog, we will debunk 5 of the most common lawn mower myths you might have heard.

Myth #1: You Should Mow Your Lawn as Short as Possible

Many people believe that mowing your lawn as short as possible is the best way to keep it looking neat and tidy. However, cutting your grass too short can actually be harmful to your lawn. When grass is cut too short, it doesn’t have enough leaf area to produce energy through photosynthesis. This can weaken the grass and make it more susceptible to disease, weeds, and pests. To avoid this issue, aim to cut no more than one-third of the grass blade length each time you mow.

Myth #2: You Should Mow Your Lawn in the Same Direction Every Time

Another common myth is that you should always mow your lawn in the same direction. The theory behind this is that it will help prevent ruts and grooves from forming in the grass. However, mowing in the same direction every time can actually cause the grass blades to lean in one direction. To keep your lawn looking its best, try changing the direction you mow each time you cut the grass. Alternating the pattern allows the blades to return to a more upright position.

Myth #3: You Should Sharpen Your Mower Blades Every Year

While it’s true that sharp mower blades are important for a clean cut, you don’t necessarily need to sharpen them every year. Instead, it’s better to sharpen your mower blades when they start to dull. Some signs that your mower blades need sharpening could include ragged, torn grass blades and a choppy, uneven cut. If you’re not comfortable sharpening your mower blades yourself, bring them into Suburban Lawn Equipment to take care of that for you.

Myth #4: You Should Bag Your Grass Clippings

Many people believe that they should always bag  grass clippings and remove them from the lawn. However, grass clippings can actually be beneficial for your lawn. As the clippings break down, they release nutrients back into the soil that can help fertilize your lawn. In addition, leaving the clippings on the lawn can help reduce water evaporation and soil erosion.

Myth #5: You Should Only Mow When Your Grass is Dry

The last myth is that many people believe you should only mow your lawn when the grass is dry. While it’s true that wet grass can be more difficult to mow, it’s not always needed to wait for dry conditions. As long as your mower blades are sharp, mowing wet grass shouldn’t cause any harm to your lawn. Just be sure to take extra care when maneuvering your mower on wet grass to avoid slipping or damaging the grass.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many myths surrounding lawn mower usage during the spring season. By understanding the facts behind these myths, you can ensure that you’re using your mower properly and keeping your lawn looking healthy and vibrant. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully maintained lawn this spring!

3 Helpful Steps to Winterize Your Commercial Lawn Mower

Here are 3 simple steps you can take to store your lawn mower before winter arrives. Taking these steps will ensure that you can get your mower up and running without issue next lawn mowing season, along with getting more time out of your equipment.

Step 1: Prepare Your Battery For Storage

By disconnecting the battery on your mower, you can ensure that its charge and the battery itself will last longer. When a battery is connected to the mower, it will slowly drain over time. While an unplugged battery will also drain over time, it will do so much slower. To help prevent this from happening  you can start your mower once a month and let it run for about 10-15 minutes to keep the battery charged when it’s not being used.

Step 2: Clean Your Equipment

If you are looking for your equipment to last for years to come, the last thing you want to do is leave grass on it, especially on your mower’s deck. Make sure to give your commercial equipment a final bath before storing it away for the winter! Leaving caked on grass on your mower will retain moisture, and corrode your lawn mowers deck, and other parts prematurely.

Step 3: Service Your Mower

If you are looking to go above and beyond, you should definitely plan on getting a complete service on your lawn mower before it goes into hibernation during the winter season. This will leave you better prepared for the next mowing season.

You will want to take the time to change your oil, replace your fuel filter, sharpen your blades, level your deck, and grease all your lawnmower’s joints. Taking the time to handle these service points now, will allow you to hit the ground running next mowing season.

snow thrower

Tips and Tricks for Preparing Your Snow Thrower for Winter

There is no worse feeling than being stuck with a driveway full of snow and a broken snow thrower. This is why it is so important to service your snow thrower throughout the year and perform proactive maintenance. If you do not service your machine routinely, it will not continue to work and perform in the way you want it to. Even though it is August, now is the time to start preparing your snow thrower for the winter. Here are some tips and tricks:

Check Oil Level

You will first want to check the oil level on your snow thrower and make sure it is up to level. You turn and pull it out the dip-stick just as you would on a car. Check the level and determine if you need to add more oil.

Check Fuel

Next up is to check the fuel. You may have fuel in the thrower from last year, if it smells off, you should drain it and add new gas. To drain the fuel, you will want to make sure you have a good sized drain pan. Unscrew the nut underneath the carburetor, and place the drain pan underneath.

Once you have drained the snow thrower of the fuel, you can add the new fuel. You can add gas and also add StarTron. This stabilizes the gas and also cleans out what is left within the carburetor. Gas normally has a shelf-life of 30-60 days. You can also purchase TruFuel which lasts longer than gas. This can be a great option for snow throwers, as you do not need gas as often as you would for a car.

Check Controls

Now that you have oil and gas in the snow thrower you will want to make sure the machine turns on and check the controls. Make sure that both the auger and transmission engage.

Check Chute

You will now want to check and ensure that your chutes turn properly and the directional parts work as well.

Service Check at Suburban Lawn

If you are still having trouble with your snow thrower or just want to get it checked out by a professional team before the winter, bring it in to Suburban Lawn Equipment today. We service all equipment we sell so we are more than happy to help you service your snow thrower and other equipment.

For more in-depth and visual tips and tricks you can check out this video. If you are looking to purchase a snow thrower before the winter, we have a wide selection to choose from.
