Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

If you are going to be using a snow thrower this winter, one of your top priorities should always be safety. Failure to do so could results in bodily harm or injury.

Suburban Lawn Equipment is here to help prevent any accidents from occurring with these helpful safety tips when using a snow thrower! Keep reading!

Safety Tips When Using Snow Throwers

  1. Clear debris before using. It’s important to keep in mind that the snow thrower is a powerful piece of equipment and it will pick up debris or rocks in its path. To avoid damage clear the area before use.
  2. Wear appropriate clothing. Clothing and other accessories are at risk of becoming entangled in the moving parts of the snow thrower. Avoid wearing long scarves, dangling jewelry, or any other form of loose clothing while operating this machinery.
  3. Go with the wind. Whenever possible, do not fight the wind. Try to point the chute downwind so that it helps blow snow.
  4. Avoid severe weather conditions. You should always avoid operating a snow thrower during heavy snowfall or minimal visibility. Waiting for heavy snowfall to pass is the recommended time to start using the snow thrower.
  5. NEVER use hands/feet to clear a clog. If you experience a clog or blockage you should first shut off the equipment, and then use either a long clean out tool, stick or broom to dislodge snow or debris from the moving parts.

Lawn Mower Winter Maintenance Tips

Lawn Mower Winter Maintenance Tips

As the seasons change and the snow begins to fall, it’s time for lawn mower winter maintenance. With a little post-season preparation, your lawn mower will feel brand new when spring comes back around.

You should always store your lawn mower in a cool/dry area, and make sure you cover the mower to prevent wear and tear. But before you cover, you should follow these basic tips below to ensure proper winterization of your lawn mower.

Lawn Mower Winter Maintenance Tips

  1. Empty the fuel tank. If you let the gas sit in the fuel tank for an extended period of time, this could cause a clog in the carburetor. We suggest that you run the engine until the gas tank is completely empty.
  2. Replace the oil. Frequently changing the oil within your lawn mower will ensure a longer life sentence. Be sure to use the suggested amount of oil provided by the manufacturer.
  3. Charge the battery. During the winter months, it’s important to charge the battery every so often to prevent battery failure.
  4. Clean the mower deck. As an effort to prevent any rust from forming, you should always clean underneath the mower deck to remove any grass clippings.
  5. Sharpen the blades. It’s better to do this ahead of time, that way when spring comes you are ready to mow!

Honda Dealer Guide to Everything Lawn Care

As your longtime local Honda dealer, we take pride in each piece of Honda equipment we sell and service. Because we only want the best quality and performance for our customers, we make sure that every time we see a product to you, we also make sure you know everything about safety operations and maintenance procedures.

Whether you’re a homeowner or a you take care of people’s lawns for a living, we want to provide you with the best of the best. If you want to learn more about mowing, lawn care or mower maintenance, you came to the right place! Below are some of your most asked questions and answers that will surely take your lawn care experience to the next level!

Honda Dealer Guide to Everything Lawn Care

Is there a right and wrong time to mow the lawn?

Any time is good to mow the lawn as long as you have good lighting conditions. In a heat or areas affected by drought, Honda recommends to raise the height of the cut and allow the grass to grow a little higher than normal during those times.

How dry must the grass be when I mow it?

As dry as possible. If the grass is wet, it won’t mulch properly and the clippings will tend to clump together or stick to the mower deck. It is a good idea to let the dew evaporate before mowing. You should be able to pass your hand over the surface of the grass and not detect free moisture.

What is the rule of thumb for the grass height before it should be mowed?

The general rule is that no more than one third of the leaf blade should be removed at any one mowing. Another way to think about this would be to mow the grass when it reaches 50 percent higher than the desired height. For example, if you are maintaining the turf area at two inches, ideally it should be mowed when it reaches three inches in height.

What does “going to seed” mean? Is this a good practice?

This means not mowing the grass and allowing it to go to seed. Some homeowners believe they can thicken up their lawn by not mowing and allowing the grass to form seed. Unfortunately, the exact opposite is true. By allowing the turfgrass to form seed, nutrients normally used for shoot and root growth are diverted to nourish the developing seed. Developing seed always has priority over shoots and roots for nutrients.

What is proper mower maintenance?

The mower must be carefully inspected at the beginning of the season. Depending on the usage, cables may need adjustment, the blade(s) may need to be sharpened or replaced and engine oil changed. The blade(s) and oil should be checked before or after each mowing.

At the end of the season, the mower should be prepared for storage as detailed in the owner manual.

What are the signs of a worn mower blade?

A worn or dull mower blade will tend to shred the grass leaf rather than cutting it cleanly. The result is a jagged tip that turns brown rapidly. This, in turn, gives the entire lawn a brownish or tan appearance for several days. The turfgrass might actually appear to be diseased or stressed, but the green color will gradually be restored as the grass leaves grow.

5 Safety Tips To Remember When Using A Honda Generator

5 Safety Tips to Remember When Using a Honda Generator

Don’t be left out in the dark this summer! The best time to purchase a Honda Generator is before an emergency strike. Owning a portable generator during a power outage really feels like having a best friend by your side.

At Suburban Lawn Equipment in Delaware, we don’t just sell outdoor power equipment. We also service it and pass on the necessary knowledge in order to encourage all customers to understand how to properly use the Honda Generator. Please read below for 5 safety tips to remember when using a Honda Generator.

5 Safety Tips To Remember When Using A Honda Generator

  1. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Before using a Honda Generator, it is important to read the manual to avoid hazardous situations and guarantee the proper use of the generator.
  2. Do NOT use a generator inside your home or business. Generators emit carbon monoxide (CO), which can be deadly if used in your home, business, or small areas (basements, garages). It would be ideal to install a battery-operated CO alarm inside your home or business as an extra precaution from toxins.
  3. Utilize a heavy-duty extension cord. Make sure to never use an extension cord with visible wires. Heavy-duty extension cords that are specifically used for the outdoors are recommended.
  4. Avoid using Honda Generator in the rain. When used in the rain, there is a risk of shock or electrocution. We recommend waiting for the rain to pass before using your Honda Generator. If you cannot wait, it is crucial that you shield the Honda Generator from moisture.
  5. Turn off Honda Generator before refueling. It’s important to let your portable generator cool down before refueling. If gasoline or any other flammable liquid is spilled onto a hot surface, this could cause a fire.

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

Whether it is a riding lawn mower or a manual lawn mower, this machinery is the probably the most frequently used piece of power equipment in your household. Therefore, appropriate lawn mower maintenance is crucial to ensure maximum efficiency and save you money.

So what can you do to properly maintain your lawn mower? Here are some tips:

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips:

  1. Check and change the oil. Prior to fall storage you should change the oil every 50 hours of use to prevent premature engine wear. You should also be changing the oil filter as well to further prevent a build up within the engine lubrication system. Keep in mind that you should always use the recommended oil by the manufacturer for that particular model.
  2. Replace the air filter. We recommend changing the air filter every 25 hours of use per season. Why? Because the air filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the carburetor and/or engine.
  3. Check the tire pressure. Many people forget about the tires, but it’s important to maintain a consistent amount of pressure throughout each tire. Failing to do will results in uneven cutting leaving your lawn appearance in disarray.
  4. Sharpen the blades. Mowers blades endure a heavy amount of wear and tear throughout the season caused by rocks and branches and so forth. We recommend sharpening your lawn mower blade every season and replacing the blade every 1 to 3 years.
  5. Change the spark plug. This is a process that is relatively inexpensive and absolutely critical to ensure an easy start up. We recommend changing the spark every year in order to maintain your lawn mower for use.

3 Reasons a Commercial Zero Turn Mower Might be Right for Your Delaware Landscaping Business

3 Reasons a Commercial Zero Turn Mower Might be Right for Your Delaware Landscaping Business

Shopping for a zero turn mower is similar to shopping for a car; there are luxury and economy models, both get you from point A to point B and all zero turning radius (ZTR) lawn mowers cut grass. They just do it with a different degree of comfort and quality.

When it comes to landscaping, time is money. The faster you get one job done, the sooner you can move onto the next one. Commercial ZTR mowers are more comfortable and make you more money.

Zero Turn Mower Comparison Chart

High Performance Engine: The fastest mowers on the market, commercial zero turns will zip across the grass at speeds up to 13 miles per hour (mph). These mowers are powered by high-performance Kawasaki or Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engines. Considered some of the best lawn mower engines available, these reliable powerhouses have up to 30 horsepower (HP) of grass devouring strength.

Full-Suspension: When mowing all day, you want as comfortable a ride as possible. Look for a commercial zero turn mower with full-suspension for the smoothest ride.  Full suspension isn’t just good for the operator, it actually allows the mower to cut better. With full-suspension, the mower will follow the contours of the lawn for the most consistent cut. The reduced shock require less repairs.

Reviews

Mowing Deck: It’s not all about size, it’s how you use it… Sure a 61″ deck is more than 5 feet of cutting girth, but the decks on commercial zero turns are built with performance features not found elsewhere. Look for decks with sloped fronts, which push the grass up, resulting in a more consistent cut. Some decks on commercial ZTR mowers include a revolutionary cutting system that allows for superior airflow discharge and enhanced cut quality.
